The Ghana Police Service has interdicted a police officer seen in a viral video allegedly assaulting a GHOne TV journalist during the Ablekuma North constituency election rerun.
The incident reportedly occurred at the Church of Pentecost – North, specifically at the Ordorkor 2 and 4 polling centers in the Tsuimaami area.
According to the victim, he was seated behind a vendor near the polling station when he was ordered by the officer to move.
“I told him I can’t just leave because we are all working, and he slapped me on the face,” the journalist recounted. “I have not done anything unethical. I have not done anything wrong.”
An eyewitness confirmed the journalist’s account, noting that the reporter explained he was on duty. The slap reportedly caused a visible scar, believed to have been inflicted by the journalist’s glasses during the assault.
In a press release issued by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, the police acknowledged monitoring the viral video and confirmed that the officer involved has been withdrawn from election duty.
“In line with internal disciplinary procedures, he has been interdicted and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation,” the statement said.
The statement, signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Richmond Mensah, assured the public that a “thorough investigation will be conducted into the matter,” with further updates to follow.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who was present at the polling center, expressed concern over the officer’s conduct.
