The Dansoman Circuit Court presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit has remanded 33-year-old driver, Anthony Atsu Godbless, into police custody following his alleged attempt to steal a car worth GH¢240,000.00 belonging to his employer under a “work and pay” agreement.
According to the Prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Portia Nuarko, the accused entered into a contractual agreement with Joshua Agbenorlevi, General Manager of Drive Track Limited, in November 2024.
Under the arrangement, Godbless was given a Nissan Note saloon car, registration number GW 9160-24, on a work-and-pay basis, expected to be completed over 51 months.
However, on June 30, 2025 the complainant discovered that the tracking device on the vehicle had been tampered with and disabled.
Multiple attempts to reach Godbless failed, as he had switched off his phone and disappeared. Sensing foul play, Agbenorlevi reported the matter to the Dansoman Police on June 28, 2025.
Acting swiftly on intelligence, Dansoman Police, with assistance from their Aflao counterparts, intercepted Godbless as he allegedly attempted to smuggle the vehicle across the border to Togo.
Reports indicate the accused had entered into negotiations with two undercover police officers to sell the car for a significantly undervalued GH¢80,000.00.
The car was retrieved, albeit with a damaged tracking device valued at GH¢1,000.00. Upon arrest, Godbless admitted to damaging the tracker, but denied stealing the vehicle or intending to sell it illegally.
He has since been arraigned before the Circuit Court on three charges:
- Attempt to commit a crime (stealing) – Contrary to Sections 18(1) and 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
- Stealing – Contrary to Section 124 of the same Act.
- Causing unlawful damage – Contrary to Section 172.
Godbless pleaded not guilty to the first two charges, but guilty with explanation to the third count, admitting to damaging the tracking device, but claiming it was accidental. However, the court ruled that his explanation was consistent with a guilty plea and officially entered a guilty verdict for Count 3.
Her Honour subsequently remanded Godbless into police custody and directed the prosecution to file disclosures and witness statements in preparation for a Case Management Conference on July 16, 2025.The case remains under investigation as the state continues to build its case against the accused.
