The Ashanti Regional Secretariat of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has postponed indefinitely the regional executive election, which was slated for yesterday, July 1, 2025 at its premises.

The regional election was halted before the electoral processes could commence due to a court order that barred the incumbent Regional Chairman, Sumaila Boakye, from seeking another term.
The Regional Chairmanship race would have been between Mr. Sumaila Boakye and Nana Kwame Afriyie.
Three members from the Takoradi-Elubo Station Branch of the Ashanti Regional GPRTU, who filed the injunction are demanding accountability and stewardship of Mr. Boakye’s tenure at the said branch.
Addressing the media, Mr. Samuel Addai, Ashanti Regional Vice Chairman, GPRTU, explained that his outfit on Monday evening, June 30, 2025 received a court order that bars Mr. Sumaila Boakye from contesting the Regional Chairman slot.

Disclosing excerpts of the court order, the Vice Chairman stated that three individuals; Secretary, Advisor and one other, of the Takoradi-Elubo Station Branch of the Ashanti Regional GPRTU are behind the injunction.
They are seeking accountability from Mr. Sumaila Boakye during his tenure as the Chairman of the said branch.
Mr. Addai disclosed that upon deliberation, the leadership of the union thought it wise to postpone the election “indefinitely” to avoid mayhem.
