The Accra Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Samuel Bright Acquah, has sentenced a 34-year-old rubbish collector, Asimah Delali, also known as “Ayigbe,” to five years imprisonment without the option of a fine for tampering with electrical infrastructure and stealing components belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Delali was convicted on two counts: interference with the supplier’s distribution system, contrary to Rule 41(2)(3) of LI 1816 (2005), and stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
According to court records, on June 8, 2025, Delali unlawfully entered the outdoor garden of the Africa Trade House near Cedi House in Accra.
He allegedly tampered with an electrical distribution pillar and removed its door, valued at GH¢5,000, along with an electrical termination cover, the value of which is yet to be determined. Both items are properties of ECG.
The accused, who is homeless and works as a rubbish collector, had been under suspicion due to a series of recent thefts targeting ECG infrastructure in the area, thefts which have disrupted power supply to parts of the central business district.
Winfred Wayem, Head of Security at Africa Trade House, apprehended Delali with the help of other witnesses at about 11:30 a.m. on the day of the incident. He was caught in possession of the stolen items and was handed over to the police.
During the investigation, Delali admitted to the crime in the presence of an independent witness.
Prosecuting officer Ama Frema Asante, representing the Electricity Company of Ghana, told the court that Delali’s actions formed part of an increasing threat to public infrastructure and that his conduct showed no remorse.
In delivering judgment, His Honour Acquah stated that the accused had shown no sign of regret, and warned that the court would not be lenient if he reoffended. Delali was sentenced to five years in prison with no option of a fine.
