Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, presiding over the Dansoman Circuit Court, has heard a case involving a 41-year-old salesman (name withheld) who stands accused of physically assaulting his wife (name withheld), following a disagreement over arrangements concerning their children’s schooling and residence.
He has been charged for causing unlawful harm, contrary to Section 69 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
According to facts presented in court by Inspector Esther Mensah, the accused and the complainant, a Graphic Designer, live together with their children at Ablekuma Fanmilk, in Accra. On March 24, 2025 an argument allegedly broke out between the couple over the welfare of their children.
While the complainant suggested enrolling the children in school, the accused proposed that she and the children move in with his mother-in-law, so the children could be cared for during her working hours.
The disagreement reportedly escalated when the complainant rejected the proposal. The accused is alleged to have slapped her, held her by the neck, pushed her to the ground and beat her in the presence of their children.
The complainant later reported the incident to the police and was issued a medical form for examination. The accused was subsequently arrested and charged with causing unlawful harm.
Her Honour granted bail in the sum of GH¢10,000 with two sureties, both of whom must be justified.
The accused is also required to deposit his Ghana Card with the court registry and report to the police every two weeks until further notice.
The judge advised both parties to consider an out-of-court settlement given that they remain a couple.
The case has been adjourned to July 16, 2025.
