The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed concern over the exchange of words in public between some leading members of the party calling on the combatants to be tolerant and treat each other with mutual respect.
Addressing party supporters as part of his ‘Thank You’ tour in the Savannah Region on Saturday, the former vice president said party leaders washing their dirty linens in public could affect the fortunes of the party and called for ‘cease fire’.
“During the 2024 elections, our own utterances against each other, against the party and against our government were used against us. In fact, they sponsored adverts in the media, using utterances of our own members against us during the campaign,” Dr Bawunia told the party followers, adding that “If we are to stay stronger as a party, such conducts ought to stop because it does not help the unity and strength of our party.”
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia also called on the rank and file of the NPP not to despair, but strongly keep hope alive, for a brighter future for the party.
According to him, history was on the side of the NPP to stage a strong comeback in 2028.
“History is on our side to reorganise and stage a comeback, so we should all be optimistic and keep our hopes alive. We have done it before and we shall do it again in 2028 by the grace of God.
“The other day when I visited President Kufuor, he inspired me by reminding me of how he got 39% in 1996, and how the party rallied and won the 2000 elections.”
President Akufo-Addo also lost the 2008 election, returned in 2012 and as a party, we fought hard to massively win in 2016. We have done it before and we can do it again, so I urge all of you to keep hope alive.”
Addressing issues surrounding the 2024 elections, Dr Bawumia said the report and recommendations by the Professor Mike Oquaye Committee, which investigated reasons for the NPP’s defeat, will serve as guide for the party, as it reorganises at all levels.
“So many of issues have been raised and recommendations made so we all have to get on board together and correct our mistakes as a party. We have learnt our lessons and we shall do better when we get the opportunity again.”
While urging the party members to remain optimistic, Dr Bawumia also urged them to embrace and uphold party unity, treating fellow party members with respect.
“Unity is key in everything we are doing. It is very important to prioritise the unity of our party by coming together as a family.”
