A 19-year-old labourer, Abdul Gafar Abubakar, has been arraigned for allegedly breaking into a private residence and stealing electrical cables valued at GH¢20,000.
Abubakar, who resides at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, is facing three counts: unlawful entry with intent to commit a crime, unlawful damage, and stealing—offences contrary to various sections of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
According to the prosecution led by Chief Inspector Emelia Mensah, the incident occurred on March 24, 2025, at Sowutuom Rescue Point in Accra.
The complainant, Paul Mensah Vicker, a trader, reported that the accused had unlawfully entered his newly built two-storey residence.
The brief facts presented in court indicate that Abubakar rode an unregistered Apsonic motorbike from Kwame Nkrumah Circle and parked it near the complainant’s fenced property under the cover of darkness.
He allegedly scaled the wall and accessed the building via scaffolding left by masons. Inside, he reportedly cut and packed installed electrical cables from both the first and second floors into a fertilizer bag.
The accused was intercepted by witnesses who had heard suspicious noises and saw him emerging from the adjacent house.
A search revealed a concealed jackknife, a screwdriver left at the scene, and a pair of scissors near the parked motorbike.
He was handed over to the police and formally charged. Abubakar has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, who presided over the court, granted bail in the sum of GH¢70,000 with three sureties. Two of the sureties must be public servants earning not less than GH¢2,000 monthly and one must be justified.
The accused is also required to deposit his Ghana Card at the court registry and report to the police biweekly.
The case has been adjourned to April 19, 2025 for further hearing.
The prosecution is expected to serve the accused with all disclosures and witness statements ahead of the next sitting.
