Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the One who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. – John 7:18
As Christians, we are in a very special and sacred time of the year in the Christian calendar—Passion Week, also known as Holy Week. It begins this Sunday, April 13, 2025, with Palm Sunday, the day we remember Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The week continues with the Last Supper on Thursday, His suffering and crucifixion on Good Friday and His rest in the tomb on Holy Saturday. Then comes the most glorious day—Easter Sunday —when we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead!
This sacred week reminds us not only of the sacrifice Jesus made for our salvation but also of the way He lived—a life of purpose, love, truth, and compassion. As we journey through Passion Week, it is a perfect time to reflect on the life of Jesus and commit ourselves to following His example by embracing six powerful character traits He modeled for us.
1. Jesus Always Spoke the Truth
Jesus never avoided the truth—even when it was uncomfortable. In Matthew 12:34, He fearlessly called out the Pharisees as a “brood of vipers.” He spoke with boldness, not to win people over or gain influence, but because truth matters.
Jesus didn’t soften His message to please anyone. Whether or not people liked what He said, He always spoke the truth—because only the truth has the power to set people free (John 8:32). That’s a standard we should aim to follow as His disciples.
2. Jesus Invites Us to Give More and Promises More
Jesus said in Matthew 11:30 that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. But He also made it clear that following Him means total commitment. In Matthew 16:24, He said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
He does not ask us to give up our lives for nothing. He promises peace, joy, and eternal life in return. It may not be an easy road, but it is the most rewarding journey we could ever choose.
3. Jesus Values You Deeply
Jesus’ love for us runs so deep that He gave His life to restore our relationship with God. As Hebrews 12:2 puts it, “For the joy set before him he endured the cross.” That joy was the chance to be with us—to call us His own.
Jesus didn’t die out of obligation. He died because we matter to Him. He saw us in our brokenness and chose to pay the price for our sins. That’s how much He values you and me.
4. Jesus Reaches Out to Everyone
Jesus never ignored those that society looked down on. He actively reached out to the rejected, the poor, the sick, and the sinners. He went looking for people that others had written off.
A perfect example is the story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19. As a tax collector, Zacchaeus was disliked and seen as corrupt. Yet, Jesus didn’t avoid him. Instead, He called him by name and chose to visit his home. Jesus showed that no one is too far gone for His love.
5. Jesus Was Moved by Compassion
When Jesus heard that His cousin, John the Baptist, had been killed, He withdrew to find solitude (Matthew 14:13). But instead of finding quiet, He was met by crowds seeking His help. Even in His grief, Jesus looked at the people and was filled with compassion. He healed the sick and ministered to their needs (Matthew 14:14).
This is the heart of Jesus—selfless and full of love. He put others first, not because He had to, but because compassion was at the core of who He is. We are called to carry that same heart into our own relationships and actions.
6. Jesus Freely Forgives
Forgiveness is one of the greatest gifts Jesus offers us. In Matthew 18, Peter asked if forgiving someone seven times was enough. Jesus replied, “Not seven times, but seventy times seven”(v. 22)—meaning there should be no limit.
Jesus forgives not out of politeness, but to free us from guilt and shame. His forgiveness restores our relationship with God and allows us to live a full, meaningful life (John 10:10). As recipients of His mercy, we too must learn to forgive others, again and again.
Conclusion
Jesus Christ is the perfect example of how to live. In this Passion Week, especially as we begin with Palm Sunday this weekend, let us fix our eyes on Him. His life shows us what it means to live with love, boldness, compassion, and integrity. As we draw closer to the celebration of His resurrection, let us also draw closer to His character.
May we reflect His light in our words, actions, and choices.
Remain Blessed!
