A 38-year-old soldier, Staff Sergeant Clement Ayomah, has appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding 75 individuals of a total amount of GH¢723,000.00 under the guise of facilitating their enlistment into various security services in Ghana.
The accused, who is currently in the custody of the Ghana Military Police, pleaded not guilty to a charge of defrauding by false pretences, contrary to Section 131(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Dressed in military camouflage, Ayomah took the witness stand to deny the allegations before Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit.
According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Wonder, Ayomah approached the complainant, Police Officer Gilbert Gli of Techiman MTTD, in September 2021 and claimed he had the necessary connections to assist individuals seeking recruitment into the nation’s security services.
Gli, acting on that representation, gathered 75 interested persons who contributed the amount, which he then forwarded to the accused.
Despite receiving the full payment, Ayomah allegedly failed to honour his promise and did not secure enlistment for any of the individuals.
Following persistent demands, the accused refunded GH¢155,000.00 leaving a balance of over GH¢568,000.00 unpaid. The complainant subsequently lodged a complaint with the Accra Regional CID, leading to Ayomah’s arrest by the Military Police Command.
In court, counsel for the accused pleaded for bail, stating that Ayomah is not a flight risk and is currently a witness in an ongoing Court Marshal, involving the same matter at Burma Camp, scheduled for April 11, 2025.
The court was told that the accused will testify against one person involved in the case. The prosecution did not oppose the bail application.
However, the presiding judge granted bail in the sum of GH¢600,000.00 with three sureties, one of whom must justify with title deeds equal in value to the bail amount.
The judge also ordered that the accused remain in the custody of the military police until bail conditions are met. The case has been adjourned to May 28, 2025.
