“Nollywood today is slightly distorted”- Segun Arinze

Puopular Nollywood Actor, Segun Arinze has expressed concerns over the current state of the Nigerian film industry, pointing out key differences between today’s Nollywood and its earlier years.

In an interview on JoyNews, Arinze noted that while Nollywood is still progressing, its legacy has been somewhat distorted.

“Even though it is slightly distorted today, we are still on track, and nothing is ever perfect,” he remarked when asked if the new generation has upheld the industry’s legacy.

He emphasised that Nollywood’s increasing shift from authentic African storytelling is eroding its originality.

“We are losing originality,” he stated, explaining that the industry’s evolving narratives often stray from traditional values. “The perception of Nollywood is changing, and the way stories are told now lacks the authenticity we once had. Just because we have traveled abroad doesn’t mean we should discard our cultural heritage.”

Drawing an example from traditional African marriage rites, Arinze contrasted them with Western-style white weddings, noting that while the latter is a European tradition, it has been widely adopted by Africans. He argued that this cultural shift extends to Nollywood, where foreign influences are increasingly overshadowing indigenous storytelling.

“The kind of stories being told now are making Nollywood lose its originality,” he reiterated. “We don’t have to abandon our traditional ways just because we have been exposed to foreign cultures.”
