The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority’s allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering through the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) seem to have shocked President John Dramani Mahama, as he has directed immediate investigations into the allegation, less than 24 hours after it was made.
On Wednesday, April 2, 2025 President Mahama took to his Facebook page, announcing the directive to the relevant security agencies to collaborate with the Member of Parliament for Assin North, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, to investigate the allegations.
“My attention has been drawn to allegations made at a press conference by an honourable member of parliament, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, regarding two suspicious flights arriving at the Kotoka International Airport suspected to be involved in drug trafficking and money laundering.
“Government takes all allegations seriously, and to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation, I have directed all relevant investigative agencies – including the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Police CID, the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), and the National Security Coordinator – to immediately and fully collaborate with the honourable member of parliament so he provides all necessary information to investigate the allegations and take all action necessary to expose any drug dealing,” the post said.
ALLEGATION
Addressing journalists, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member of the Defence and the Interior Committee, indicated that AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B landed at Kotoka International Airport from Gran Canaria on March 20 and March 12, respectively.
According to him, these private jets carried suspicious cargo from an island “known for its notoriety in drug trafficking and money laundering, among others”.
The minority were intrigued that the two suspicious flights would depart to the same location on the same day, March 25, 2025 five and 13 days after landing in Ghana, respectively.
REQUEST
Hours after President Mahama had made his Facebook post, a letter requesting a meeting between the security agencies and the Committee on Defence emanated.
Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member of the Defence and the Interior Committee, has written to the Committee Chair requesting the committee to invite the National Security, Police CID, Narcotics Control Commission and the National Investigations Bureau to brief it on the issue.
He wants the agencies to brief the committee and provide updates on investigations being conducted into the uncovered twelve 20-foot containers stashed with gold bars and currencies, the busted cocaine worth $350 million and another worth $120 million, and the two flights that are suspected to have carried cocaine and money.
“The Committee would also volunteer information that will be useful for the security agencies in the conduct of their investigations into the specific matters under reference,” the letter stated.
