The dream of unemployed, Levina Tamakloe, to travel to the United States has turned into a nightmare after she allegedly lost GH¢66,000 to a woman who promised to facilitate her journey.
The woman in question is Dorcas Atsu Tetteh, a 40-year-old Marketer, who is facing charges of defrauding by false pretences, contrary to Section 131 of the Criminal Code 1960 (Act 29).
She has, however, failed to appear before the Circuit court in Dansoman, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit on two scheduled dates – February 8 and 10, 2025.
The case has been adjourned to March 3, where she is expected to be present.
How the Alleged Fraud Unfolded
According to court documents, Levina Tamakloe, who resides atAblekuma, had expressed her intention to travel to the U.S. in April 2024.
A witness in the case provided her with Dorcas Tetteh’s contact, claiming she owned JAH Travel and Tour Co. Ltd., a travel agency based in Dodowa.
Upon reaching out to Dorcas Tetteh, the accused allegedly assured Levina Tamakloe that she could secure her a U.S. visa and other travel documents within six months.
Dorcas Tetteh is said to have demanded GH¢66,000 for the process and provided her Fidelity Bank account details, into which Levina Tamakloe transferred the amount.
However, months passed without any progress, prompting Levina Tamakloe to report the matter to the police.
Investigations revealed that Dorcas Tetteh admitted to taking the money and initially refunded GH¢10,000, promising to pay the remaining balance within a week. She allegedly failed to do so, leading to her being charged.
As stated, Dorcas Tetteh was expected in court on February 8 and 10, 2025 but failed to appear on both occasions. Her absence has delayed proceedings, with the next hearing scheduled for March 3, 2025.
Meanwhile, Levina Tamakloe remains without her money or the promised visa, as she awaits justice in the case against Tetteh.
