A 32 year old small scale miner, Maxwell Boakye, who hails from Wassa Akropong, has been elected as the Council of State member for the Western Region.
Maxwell Boakye polled 17 votes to beat eight other contestants for the same position, including Nana Akwasi Nsiah Gyamfi, a successful businessman in Takoradi, who was highly tipped to win the election.
Nana Gyamfi, going into the election, had the full endorsement of the ruling party, but was disappointed as he only polled 10 votes, out of the 28 valid votes cast.
The elected Assembly members, who formed the Electoral College and mostly sympathisers of the ruling party, appeared to have betrayed the party’s favourite for the position, when they voted against him.
Six other contestants – Nana Nkanomanko IV, Nana Akosua Gyamfiaba II, Queenmother of Nyankrom, Nana Bonya Kofi VI, Nortey Ernest Selorm, Jacob Oppong Acquah and Muhammed Danjum secured zero votes.Clement Adjei on the other hand had only 1 vote.
