The immediate past Minister for Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, has asked the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Committee to find out how state lands in some prime areas in Accra and Tamale were sold, and the politicians behind the purchase.
Nitiwul, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, insists that Ghanaians would be happy to know the personalities who now own these prime state lands.
Debating the 11th report of the Appointments Committee that led to the approval of Samuel OkudzetoAblakwa as Minister for Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 the former Minister for Defence argued that the scope of work of the ORAL should extend to
Borteyman, Adentan Aviation and Tamale Residency.
Dominic Nitiwul contended that he had list of lands obtained by politicians between 2010 and 2016. Though he did not openly state the political party whose politicians they belonged to, he promised to officially write to ORAL to provide the list.
“I commend them for saying they will do ORAL work. I just want you to make sure that the ORAL committee is set up appropriately according to the law and the way you work.
“But I want them to go to Borteyman first and check the lands that were given between 2014 and 2016, who benefitted from Borteyman lands.
“The lands that share a boundary with affordable houses that President Kufuor built, state lands, they were given out in 2014, 2015, and 2016.
“Find out the people who own that land. I want you to go to the Aviation Land, that huge land at
Madina-Adentan and find out the people who own that land,” he said.
“Go to Tamale, behind what we call the residency, where the president sometimes goes and sleeps, they are all state lands, go and find out the owners of those lands.
“Go to the lands adjacent to the military cemetery and find out those who own the lands. I have the list of state lands that were obtained between 2010 and 2016, I will provide them to the chairman of ORAL,” he added.
MICROPHONE
The MP for Bimbilla had a tough time mentioning the government lands he claimed had been purchased by politicians, but the ORAL committee, chaired by OkudzetoAblakwa, had turned a blind eye to them.
The microphone Dominic Nitiwul was speaking through, was being intermittently turned off, interrupting his flow and truncating the information he was providing the House, especially for the Hansard to record it.
It is not known whether the microphone was turned off by the majority side, or his own side, the minority.
The Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, who was chairing the meeting was compelled to yell at members to be tolerant and allow the MP for Bimbilla to make his submission without putting off his microphone.
The microphone setup is such that not more than two can be on at the same time, as a third person would automatically disable all microphones.
Regardless of the incessant turning off of his microphone, Nitiwul managed to inform the ORAL chairman, Okudzeto, who was in the chamber, to look for the owners of the lands in the areas he had mentioned.
ONE-SIDED
The ORAL committee has, for some time now, published properties belonging to the state, but allegedly secured by politicians and persons closely linked to politicians, at the expense of the nation.
It has been observed that all the persons involved are either members of the New Patriotic Party, the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government, or associated with either of the two.
Ghanaians have yet to know if members of the National Democratic Congress, those who were part of the erstwhile Mills-Mahama and Mahama administrations or associated with them, did also acquire state lands, which may interest the ORAL committee.
Meanwhile, the 2010 to 2016 period Dominic Nitiwul mentioned on the floor of Parliament last Tuesday were years under the Mills-Mahama and Mahama administrations.
