Two individuals, Naomi Aweke, 46, a travel agent and Masawudu Mosah, 50, a businessman have been charged with defrauding a freight forwarder, Sadick Ali Hashim, of GH¢124,774.
The accused allegedly collected the amount on the pretence of securing Nicaraguan visas for two of the complainant’s relatives, Ibrahim Shaibu and Hawa Mohammed.
The case, currently before the Circuit Court in Dansoman, is presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit.
However, during a hearing on January 22, 2025 both accused were absent from court. The judge subsequently adjourned the case to February 12, 2025.
Charges Against The Accused
The accused faces charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and defrauding by false pretences, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 131(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
According to court documents, the duo allegedly conspired and obtained GH¢124,774 from Sadick Ali Hashim on June 12, 2023 under false pretences.
The complainant was reportedly led by Masawudu Mosah to make the payment at the De-Lois Travels and Tours Office, operated by Naomi Aweke in La, Accra.
The payment was made as deposits for two air tickets and visas to Nicaragua for the complainant’s relatives.
Background and Investigation
The complainant stated that after making the payment, he received receipts for the transaction but no tickets or visas were issued.
Attempts to recover his money proved futile, prompting him to file a complaint with the Accra Regional Crime Officer on November 27, 2023.
Following investigations, Aweke admitted to receiving the money but claimed she spent it on instructions from Mosah.
Despite several police invitations, Mosah refused to appear. He was eventually arrested on August 30, 2024, and admitted to using the funds for purposes other than those agreed upon.
During the investigation, police managed to recover GH¢55,000 from Mosah as part of the amount defrauded. However, the remaining balance is yet to be accounted for.
The case continues on February 12, 2025.
