The Five Member committee vetting applicants for the position of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCES) have confirmed completion of its work.
The committee has, however, denied that it has shortlisted some of the candidates.
The committee is made up of the Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nana Toku as Chairman and other four members. Speaking in a telephone interview with The Chronicle, Nana Kojo Toku told this reporter that after completion of their work, they have not sat down to evaluate the outcome of the vetting, let alone shortlist candidate.
“It is not true we have shortlisted applicants for the MMDA positions. We have not sat to evaluate the outcome of the vetting after completion of work”.
According to Nana Toku, when the committee members finally shortlist the candidates, the report would be sent to the office of the president and same would be made public.
A total of 138 applicants from the 14 MMDAs, who are mostly NDC members, have put forward their names for consideration as MMDCEs. Each of the MMDAs recorded not less than 10 applicants for the position.
The committee would shortlist three applicants after the vetting for onward submission to the seat of government for the president to select one.
Following the completion of the vetting, a list purporting to be the shortlisted candidates has gone viral on the social media.
The development appears to have created panic and tension mostly amongst the applicants who did not find their names in the purported list.
Meanwhile the Regional Communication office of the NDC has issued a press statement denying the list in circulation.
The statement explained that the list in circulation was a grand scheme by some group of persons to create serious tension and dissatisfaction in the NDC.
The Regional Communication Officer of the party, Richard Kirk Mensah, who signed the statement said to the best of his knowledge, the committee has not met to evaluate the outcome of the vetting.
He indicated that the assurance from the Regional Executives committee is that when the evaluation was done together with the necessary consultation done, the 3 shortlisted candidates would be made known to the public.
“We should all exercise restraint because even out of the three names, the president has the sole prerogative to appoint one and only one,” the statement said.
