The Kofi Job Foundation, a philanthropic organisation has footed the medical bills of three children who have been diagnosed of cancer at the Kumasi South Government Hospital.
The organisation is paying GH¢120, 000 for the cost of two patients who have been diagnosed of two cancer diseases namely Retinoblastoma, a rare childhood cancer that starts in the retina and (Cancer of the Kidney) -Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) respectively.
Job Foundation is also bearing the cost of another child cancer patient at the same hospital.
This was made known when Mr. Kofi Job, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kofi Job Constructions Company, together with his wife, Dr. Esther Gyebi and a team of clergy visited the hospital.
The above gesture forms part of the broader exercise the foundation had embarked upon. Kofi Job and his entourage first visited the Tafo Government Hospital and proceeded later toManhyia Government Hospital and the Kumasi South Government Hospital.
In each health facility, the foundation held a meeting with hospital authorities to know their pressing needs and attended to some of them.
In a meeting with authorities of Kumasi South Government Hospital, where he ended his philanthropic exercise, Kofi Job bemoaned the conditions of three children who have been diagnosed of cancer, describing it as pathetic.
He also expressed worry about the inability of patients to pay their medical bills, underscoring that many people die because of their inability to afford healthcare.
Addressing the media at Kumasi South Government Hospital, Dr.Mrs. Esther Gyebi, the wife of Kofi Job, expressed appreciation to her husband, saying it is God who has done it.
Dr.Gyebi indicated that in all, the foundation has spent almost one million Ghana Cedis in their philanthropic gesture.
In sharing challenges the foundation observed in their visit to the above mentioned hospitals, Esther Gyebi revealed that many patients are in dire need of support, highlighting two children who have been diagnosed of eye and kidney cancer but parents are unable to pay the medical bills.
Additionally, she also disclosed that some hospitals were in need of CPAP machine-a device that helps people to breathe while they sleep and Phototherapy, a gadget used to treat conditions such as jaundice and skin disorder.
On his part, Mr. Kofi Job told the media that in many instances, people ask the government to intervene, but asked“who is the government?”
According to Kofi Job,government is the citizenry and they should put themselves together for the betterment of the society
“The government is between you and I. The government cannot shoulder everything in the world-it is impossible.”
Kofi Job emphasised that it is not that he does not know what to do with the wealth that God has given him, but rather he wanted to help society.
“When we visited the Kumasi South Hospital,we saw children who have been diagnosed of cancer, with their parents and guardians unable to afford the cost of surgery and the Kofi Job Foundation has taken it upon itself to help pay the bills”.
He pleaded with the wealthy people in Ghana to go to the aid of the poor in the society especially those battling for survival at the hospitals.
“I am saddened per what I have observed -children are unable to breath and the hospitals cannot afford a machine to correct this health challenge among the children.
“I want all wealthy people in the world to know: If you have money and you are enjoying it with only your wife and kids, is this wealth? Go to KATH and see a wealthy person whose money could not save him or her and has died.
“I am pleading with the rich in the name of God to visit hospitals and address their challenges for Ghana to develop, because health challenges in Ghana are unimaginable and people are suffering.”
The Head of Paediatric Oncologist Unit at the Kumasi South Government Hospital, Dr Alimatu Salam, expressed appreciation to the Kofi Job Foundation.
“We are so appreciative of what Kofi Job has done, bearing the cost of cancer treatment of kids’ right from chemotherapy, surgery and all other related costs, such as transportation of the parents and guardians. We are so grateful and we ask for God’s blessing for Kofi Job for his kind gesture.”
Asked about the cost of cancer treatment, Dr. Salam noted that it is between GH¢60,000 and GH¢100,000 depending on the type of cancer being treated.
