Sarki Alhaji Abdullai Ali Barry, Asanteman Zongo Nkosuohene, has called for calm at Obuasi.
He has urged the bereaved families to remain calm and ensure that peace and tranquillity prevail in the aftermath of the recent clash between small-scale miners and the military, at AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) at Obuasi.
The Peace Ambassador expressed deep concern over the incident and called on the bereaved families and the youth, particularly in the Zongo community in the area, to remain calm.
Sarki Ali Barry, who oversees the development of Zongo communities in the Ashanti Region on behalf of the Asantehene, while addressing a press conference in Kumasi, condemned the tragic loss of lives, describing it as regrettable and extended his condolences to the bereaved families, while he wished the injured ones speedy recovery.
“Obuasi Zongo community is under my jurisdiction and I detest any act which impedes its progress and development”, he said.
He stressed the urgent need to maintain peace at Obuasi and appealed to the youth not to do anything to mar the peace prevailing in the mining town and also to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, in view of the tragedy.
The Zongo Nkosuohene recommended a stakeholders dialogue to diffuse any looming tension and to adopt a lasting solution to the matter, as well as addressing the underlying issues surrounding mining activities at Obuasi and its environs.
On his part, Otumfuo’s Dwantoahene, Nana Sefa Bosompem, urged parents to caution their wards against any form of violence.
