Mr. Leonardo Santos Simão, the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel has praised Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Ghana’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), for his exemplary leadership in ensuring peaceful elections in the country.
Mr. Simão, who met with the IGP and the Police Management Board (POMAB) in Accra yesterday, lauded the collaborative efforts of the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies in maintaining peace during the election period.
Addressing a delegation that included the UN Resident Coordinator and other officials, Mr. Simão indicated the critical role security forces played in creating an environment conducive to a calm and orderly electoral process.
“Our mission today is simple; to congratulate you for the excellent work you did. Peaceful elections do not happen by chance.
“They are the result of meticulous planning and execution by dedicated teams like yours. Your efforts will serve as an example for other African nations seeking peace and stability,” he stated.
He further acknowledged the challenges often associated with elections, including heightened emotions that can lead to unrest.
However, he commended the security task force—comprising the Ghana Police Service, Customs, Immigration, Fire Service, and other agencies – for their proactive approach in averting potential conflicts.
Mr. Simão also underscored the educative role played by the security forces. Reflecting on his participation in stakeholder meetings prior to the elections, he noted the constructive engagement between security agencies, media, civil society, the judiciary, and other stakeholders.
“These interactions fostered a shared commitment to peaceful elections. The result is what we see today – a testament to your hard work and dedication.
“The United Nations is proud to be associated with these peaceful elections and we hope to share your experiences with other countries as a model for success,” he added.
The UN delegation’s acknowledgment underscores the importance of security sector professionalism in fostering democratic stability across the continent.
This commendation comes as Ghana continues to strengthen its reputation as a beacon of democracy and peace in West Africa.
