A graphiconline report over the weekend quoted the Greater Accra Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Gladys Pinkrah, as calling on all eligible voters including men, women, youth, especially first-time voters and persons with disabilities (PWDs) to come out in their numbers to vote in Tomorrow’s District Level Elections (DLEs) for the development of their localities.
She said “A high voter turnout is an indication of citizen involvement or participation in governance and decision-making at the local level.” According to the state owned media publication, Mrs Pinkrah made the call at a public engagement held in Accra to educate and enhance citizens’ participation in the DLEs.
The DLEs are meant to elect assembly members and unit committee members at designated electoral areas in the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
The elections are in accordance with the Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462), which provides for the election of assembly members to MMDAs.
In an era where democracy is the cornerstone of our society, The Chronicle finds it imperative that every eligible voter exercises his or her right to vote. The upcoming District Level Elections provide a unique opportunity for the general population to actively participate in the democratic process and contribute to the development of their localities.
Democracy thrives on the active participation of its citizens. By casting their votes, individuals become active stakeholders in the decision-making processes that shape their local communities.
The DLEs provide a platform for the general population to elect representatives who will champion their interests, address their concerns and contribute to the overall development of their localities.
The call by the Greater Accra Regional Director of the Electoral Commission highlights the importance of inclusivity in the democratic process. These elections offer an opportunity for marginalised groups to have their voices heard and to elect representatives who can advocate for their specific needs.
First-time voters, by casting their votes, can help shape the direction of their communities. It is crucial that we encourage and empower these first-time voters to participate, as their voices are essential for a vibrant and inclusive democracy.
The DLE is not just about electing representatives; they are also about empowering communities and driving local development. The elected assembly members play a vital role in decision-making processes that directly impact the development of their localities.
By voting in these elections, individuals will be assured that their communities are well represented by capable leaders who will work towards the betterment of their neighbourhoods. It is through active participation in the democratic process that we can collectively shape the future of our localities.
By casting our votes, we empower ourselves and become active participants in the democratic dispensation. Let us embrace this opportunity and work towards building a more inclusive, representative and prosperous society.
It starts by casting your vote tomorrow in the District Level Elections.
