Ghana international Abdul Mumin finally made his long-awaited return to competitive football on Thursday, coming off the bench to help Rayo Vallecano secure a crucial 1-0 victory over Espanyol in their La Liga relegation battle at the Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas.
Mumin, who had been sidelined for more than 13 months after rupturing his ACL in March 2025, was introduced in the 80th minute, replacing Jozhua Vertrouwd. It marked his first appearance since suffering the devastating injury, a significant milestone in his long rehabilitation.
The match itself was a tense, hard-fought affair. Rayo were forced to field an improvised defence due to suspensions and injuries, with midfielder Pathé Ciss deputising at centre-back alongside Vertrouwd.
The home side grew into the game and eventually snatched the winner in the 86th minute, when substitute Sergio Camello fired home from close range to send the Vallecas crowd into delirium.
The victory was a massive step towards survival for Rayo, moving them further clear of the relegation zone. For the Black Stars, Mumin's return is timely, as he will now look to regain match fitness and push for a place in Ghana's 2026 World Cup squad.
