Former Black Stars Management Committee member Kudjoe Fianoo has advised the Ghana Football Association to refrain from appointing a new permanent head coach before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He suggests instead that technical director Winfried Schäfer be given the team on an interim basis.
Speaking to Kessben Sports, Fianoo argued that rushing to find a long-term replacement for Otto Addo with fewer than 10 weeks to the tournament would be a mistake. Instead, he urged the GFA to take its time and conduct due diligence while allowing someone already familiar with Ghanaian football to steer the ship for the World Cup.
"The technical director at the GFA understands the Ghanaian terrain, so I'll suggest we give him the national team to handle on an interim basis while we take our time to look for a new coach," Fianoo said.
"My fear is that we don't have enough time on our side. I think we should give him the job and take our time to do due diligence and find a coach who will take us through the short, medium and long term because we're becoming a country that appoints a new coach every year."
Fianoo noted that Schäfer had previously expressed interest in the Black Stars coaching job before Otto Addo was appointed, and his current role as technical director means he already knows the players and the local football environment.
The GFA is expected to announce a new head coach in the coming days, but Fianoo's advice suggests a different approach: delay the permanent appointment until after the World Cup, using Schäfer as an interim solution for the tournament.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama and will open their campaign on June 17 in Toronto.
