Former Ghana international and current Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has described speculation linking him to the vacant Black Stars job as flattering, while making it clear that his focus remains firmly on his current role.
Speaking after Gor Mahia's draw with Kariobangi Sharks, Akonnor was asked about reports that he could succeed Otto Addo, who was sacked following Ghana's fourth straight friendly defeat.
"I was once the coach of the national team. If there's a link, it's not anything negative. It's not anything bad. It's good. I'm a Ghanaian. I love my country. I love the national team," Akonnor said.
"I will support them in the World Cup. And that will be it. But for now, my focus is on Gor Mahia."
The 52-year-old, who made 51 appearances for Ghana and scored 13 goals, previously managed the Black Stars from 2020 to 2021. He took charge of the Kenyan record champions in August 2025 and has led them to the top of the FKF Premier League table, two points clear of rivals AFC Leopards.
While Akonnor acknowledged that being linked to the Ghana job is positive, he stressed that his immediate commitment is to Gor Mahia's title push.
The Black Stars continue their search for a new head coach with just weeks to go before the 2026 World Cup. Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
