Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has provided details on the withdrawal of Iñaki Williams and Brandon Thomas-Asante from the Black Stars squad ahead of the international friendlies in Austria.
According to Asante Twum, both players were unable to join the team in camp after sustaining injuries in their final club matches before the international break.
“They didn’t come to Austria. Once you make the squad public, you have to hope none of the players pick up injuries in their last matches,” he said on TV3.
He explained that Thomas-Asante was forced off in the 62nd minute during Coventry City’s game against Swansea, while Williams completed the full match for Athletic Bilbao against Real Betis but played the closing stages through pain.
“Doctors at Athletic Bilbao confirmed that Inaki played the last 20 minutes through the pain barrier. We requested proof, and they sent scans showing discomfort in his groin area,” Asante Twum added.
He noted that both clubs maintained communication with Ghana’s medical team, and after reviewing the reports, the information was passed on to the technical team.
Following medical confirmation, both players were officially excused from joining the squad.
Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer has since been called up to strengthen the squad as Ghana prepare for the matches against Austria and Germany, which form part of preparations for the 2026 World Cup group stage.
