Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has urged the establishment of an independent body to oversee the Ghana Premier League, citing recent controversies over poor officiating and betting allegations.
Speaking to Asempa FM, Afriyie stressed that government investment in the league demands a professional and transparent management structure.
"With the government now investing in our league, I believe the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) must set up a different body to run the league.
"The Premier League must be independent. It should be managed by an autonomous body to ensure professionalism and transparency."
Afriyie added that the league should be detached from the GFA secretariat, with the autonomous body reporting directly to GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo.
"The league should be separated from the secretariat of the Football Association and the autonomous body should be reporting to the General Secretary [Prosper Harrison Addo]."
The call follows a 2019 promise by GFA President Kurt Okraku that the Premier League would eventually be run by an autonomous body. A committee led by Togbe Afede XIV has since submitted its recommendations to the GFA, which are now awaiting implementation.
