Former Black Stars assistant coach George Boateng has admitted that the team suffering a back-to-back group phase elimination at the World Cup and at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was disappointing.
Boateng served as the assistant coach for the team during the 2022 global showpiece in Qatar. After three games, Ghana only recorded one win and two defeats as they suffered back-to-back World Cup group stage elimination.
Despite Otto Addo leaving his role, Chris Hughton was named as the substantive head coach for the team. Under the reign of the former Brighton and Newcastle United boss, the Black Stars also recorded no wins after suffering a defeat and two draws at the AFCON in Ivory Coast.
Boateng, who served as the assistant coach to Hughton, speaking in an interview, expressed his disappointment after the team's poor performances.
"I worked with Otto Addo and Chris Hughton, but it was disappointing that we could not qualify from the group phase of the World Cup and the AFCON. Working for Ghana was an honour," he told Premier League Production.
The former Aston Villa U-23 head coach also revealed that it was an honour for him to serve as the assistant coach of the Black Stars.
"I always feel I owe Ghana something because I could not play for them, and so when I had the opportunity to work as an assistant coach, I was honoured," Boateng added.
After Black Stars' disappointing performance in Ivory Coast, the entire technical team was disbanded which paved way for Otto Addo's return.
