Two Jamaica internationals have raised strong concerns about the potential addition of Mason Greenwood to the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Intercontinental Playoffs, describing such a move as unfair to the group that has carried the campaign so far.
Queens Park Rangers midfielder Isaac Hayden and Charlton Athletic defender Amari’i Bell publicly questioned the timing of Greenwood’s possible call-up. The Olympique Marseille forward recently secured his Jamaican passport, making him eligible to switch from England, the country of his birth, to Jamaica, the country of his grandparents.
Jamaica will face New Caledonia in March, with the winner meeting DR Congo for a place at the World Cup. Hayden argued that late additions undermine the commitment shown by players throughout the qualifiers.
“[The JFF] are obsessed with names and trying to recruit more players,” Hayden told ESPN. “If a player is not willing to commit for the last round of qualifying, unless they’re injured, I do not see why they should be joining the group in March or at the end of the season if we qualify. There is no way that should be allowed to happen.”
Bell shared similar concerns, stressing that long-serving squad members would feel overlooked.
“Many of us for years have put our blood, sweat and tears into playing for the nation, with a lot of things happening in the background,” he said. “It wouldn’t seem fair to people who have been through that whole process and will never get another chance to play at a World Cup. It’s a bit controversial.”
Greenwood has been in exceptional form for Marseille this season, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists in 12 Ligue 1 matches.
