Ghana midfielder Francis Abu faces a potentially long spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious injury during the Black Stars’ 2-0 friendly defeat to Japan in the Kirin Challenge Cup on Friday.
The Toulouse player was stretchered off the pitch midway through the match after sustaining a broken leg, leaving teammates and fans visibly shaken.
Toulouse FC quickly released an official statement offering their full support. "The images are terrible, and we send you all our strength and all our thoughts, Francis! The whole club will be by your side to overcome this ordeal! We will be by your side to help you recover as quickly as possible, Black Stars," the statement read.
The injury is a setback for both club and country, as Abu has been an important figure for the Black Stars and Toulouse. While the exact recovery timeline has not been confirmed, he is expected to be out for an extended period.
Abu, 23, joined Toulouse in the summer after spending three years at Cercle Brugge and has made eight appearances in Ligue 1 so far. He has also earned seven caps for Ghana since making his international debut in 2024.
The midfielder’s absence will be keenly felt as the Black Stars prepare for upcoming friendlies ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
