Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, has ruled out government-funded trips for fans to the 2026 World Cup, insisting resources are better spent on developing sports infrastructure nationwide.
The NDC government’s 2024 manifesto prioritises construction of new regional stadia and refurbishment of existing national facilities to meet international standards.
Key projects include building international-standard stadia in all regions and upgrading pitches, tracks, and other stadium amenities.
Plans also feature more multi-purpose sports facilities, transforming Winneba Sports College into a Sports University with regional campuses, and establishing Sports Centres of Excellence to develop athletes across disciplines.
“Well, there is no game or tournament we don’t attend with supporters, but whether I will take them or someone else will is a different ball game. So far, the government has not indicated that it will send supporters. I don’t think it is something I would recommend,” he told Peace FM.
Adams added that the government is in a period of austerity, emphasising the need to prioritise long-term sports development over short-term expenses.
“We need money to build sports infrastructure in Ghana. Then we are going to spend money to transport supporters all the way to America? That money could build five multipurpose parks in some communities, for me,” the minister said.
Ghana will make its fifth appearance at the World Cup next year in Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America.
