Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has shed light on why several senior Black Stars players were omitted from the squad for the upcoming friendly matches against Japan and South Korea.
Head coach Otto Addo left out key figures such as Jordan Ayew, Thomas Partey, and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku from the travelling team, opting instead to hand opportunities to fresh faces, including Kelvin Nkrumah, Prince Kwabena Adu, and Prince Osei Owusu.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Asante Twum clarified that the absences were not linked to travel concerns but rather legitimate reasons agreed upon by the technical team.
"Absentees from Black Stars squad for the Japan and South Korea friendly games are due to legitimate reasons and not the travelling distance.
"We all came to the agreement that some players will need to rest while others are nursing injuries, so we need to let them stay behind. The new faces in the squad have been on the list of the technical team for some time now, so it is an opportunity for them to prove their worth in these games.
He emphasized that the games against Japan and South Korea serve a strategic purpose.
"These friendly games are aimed at working on something in the Black Stars and among the players. We just want to make use of the best talent for the future," he added.
The Black Stars opened camp on Tuesday, November 11, and are expected to hold their first training session today.
The Black Stars will play Japan in the Kirin Cup on Friday, November 14, before taking on South Korea on November 18.
Both matches form part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be staged in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
