Nigeria midfielder Alex Iwobi has drawn attention on social media while on international duty, posting on Snapchat despite being advised against using the app by his club, Fulham.
The controversy followed a snap Iwobi shared from his hotel window in Morocco, where Nigeria will face Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s Gabon in the first round of CAF World Cup qualifying play-offs. Some followers interpreted his post as snobbish or ungrateful. Iwobi, however, clarified his intentions.
“You see, in life it’s all about perspective,” he said. “Because I snapped the view, people thought I’m ungrateful. I never said one thing. I’m comfy, I’m playing Mario Kart. What the hell? Just let me go and focus. We’ve got a big game coming up.”
Nigeria finished second in their qualifying group behind South Africa, setting up a tense play-off campaign. If they overcome Gabon, the Super Eagles will face the winner of Cameroon vs DR Congo, followed by another cross-continental semi-final and final to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The team’s failure to top their group came as a surprise, given Nigeria’s fifth-place ranking among African nations and their strong World Cup history, having qualified for six of the last seven tournaments before missing out in Qatar 2022.
