Christopher Katongo believes the Africa Cup of Nations has grown in quality and intensity since his playing days, reflecting the rapid development of African football.
The former Zambia captain said players are now better prepared physically, mentally, and tactically, which has elevated the tournament’s competitiveness
"Players now come ready on every level. The eagerness to represent your national team has made AFCON even more competitive," he said to CAF.
Katongo, who won the tournament in 2012, also noted that exposure has been a key driver of growth. AFCON now serves as a global showcase, offering African talent a platform to attract international attention and further their careers.
He pointed out that fan engagement has evolved significantly, with passion both in stadiums and online creating an electric atmosphere. Social media has extended conversations about African football worldwide, giving fans new ways to connect with the game.
Katongo believes that teamwork and discipline remain critical lessons for players. Talent alone is not enough to succeed; hard work, unity, and mutual support are essential. As AFCON continues to grow, he hopes the tournament maintains its spirit of pride, culture, and competitive excellence.
The 2025 AFCON edition will get underway on December 21.
