Former Germany international footballer Gerald Asamoah has been decorated with the Federal Cross of Merit for his remarkable humanitarian work and his contribution to strengthening ties between Germany and Ghana.
The 47-year-old received the prestigious honour from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Accra, where the German leader is currently on an official visit.
Asamoah, who is accompanying Steinmeier on the Africa tour as a special guest, was described as a “bridge builder between Ghana and Germany.”
President Steinmeier lauded Asamoah’s selfless service through his “Gerald Asamoah Foundation for Children with Heart Disease,” which he established in 2007.
The foundation supports children suffering from heart defects, with a strong focus on Ghana.
“The foundation regularly sends German medical personnel to Ghana. The doctors, nurses, and other medical staff perform operations and save children's lives,” Steinmeier stated.
The German President also highlighted Asamoah’s advocacy for inclusion, noting his role as an ambassador for the “School Without Racism” project.
“That's something you can wear day and night now,” Steinmeier joked after presenting the award, drawing laughter as Asamoah took a deep breath in appreciation.
Born in Ghana, Asamoah moved to Germany at the age of 12 and overcame a personal heart condition to enjoy a successful professional career.
He represented Hannover 96 and FC Schalke 04, and was part of the Germany squad that finished runners-up at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Reacting to the honour, an emotional Asamoah expressed disbelief and gratitude.
“That I’m receiving something like this, I still can’t believe it. But it’s pure joy,” he said, after nervously dropping his award certificate moments after the presentation.
He added, “It’s simply pride that the work I do is paying off.” The award, he noted, serves as motivation to continue his mission. “When God blesses someone, you have to try to give something back.”
The recognition crowns Asamoah’s enduring commitment to humanitarian causes and his lasting legacy as both a footballer and philanthropist.
