Ghana Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has acknowledged Nigeria's status as the top team in African women's football but believes the gap is rapidly narrowing.
The Swede's comments come as Ghana celebrates consecutive Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifications, a testament to the team's ongoing resurgence.
The Black Queens recently secured a bronze medal at the 2024 WAFCON, signaling their return to continental elite status.
Bjorkegren referenced a pre-tournament friendly earlier this year to make his point.
"I think we are close," he told Joy Sports. "Maybe today we need to accept that Nigeria is the number one team in Africa in women's football.
“They won the previous WAFCON, so until the next one, they remain the champions."
The Super Falcons are indeed the record champions, boasting ten titles.
Despite a 3-1 loss in the friendly, Bjorkegren felt the contest was tight.
"I actually felt that we were the better team at the start. They had the quality to score the goals, and because of that, they always stay in the game.
“Otherwise, I think we are very close to them. But for now, they are the favorites."
His analysis suggests a growing confidence that Ghana is on a trajectory to seriously challenge Nigeria's long-held supremacy.
