The University for Development Studies (UDS) men's football team, recent history-makers at the global level, have received a GHC100,000 cash boost from Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Northern Region.
The donation is in recognition of the team's spectacular triumph at the 2025 FISU World University Football Cup in Dalian, China.
The delegation, led by the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, presented the generous cheque to UDS management.
Hon. Adolf expressed immense pride in the team's achievement, highlighting how their victory over Brazil's Paulista University in the final has positively projected not only the Northern Region but all of Ghana on the international stage.
He commended the squad's dedication, teamwork, and discipline, which he said embodied the true spirit of northern resilience and national pride.
UDS made history by becoming the first African university to ever win the prestigious FISU World Cup title, an achievement that has sparked nationwide celebrations and earned praise from top national leaders, including President John Mahama, who also awarded the team GHC500,000.
UDS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Seidu Al-hassan, accepted the donation on behalf of the university.
He expressed profound appreciation to the MMDCEs for their support, noting that the contribution will be crucial in motivating the team and sustaining the university’s drive toward future sporting excellence and global recognition.
The UDS victory has been hailed as a significant milestone for African university sports, proving that talent from the grassroots can achieve world-class success with dedication and support.
