Brighton and Hove Albion coach Fabian Hurzeler has revealed that his squad are fully behind veteran striker Danny Welbeck’s potential return to the England national team.
The coach said the idea of an international comeback was raised within the dressing room, and the reaction was unanimous.
"I just asked the question to the squad whether Danny Welbeck can play for England and they all agreed.
"That was the only time we've mentioned it. Let's see what happens.
"I'm very convinced for my players and I have a big belief that Danny will be able to play for England but I always try to emphasise that England has a great coach and he will make the right decisions. Let's see."
Welbeck, who was born in England to Ghanaian parents, last played for the Three Lions in 2018 but has been in outstanding form for Brighton.
The 34-year-old striker has rediscovered his scoring touch, netting five goals in nine Premier League matches this season after an impressive campaign last term, where he scored 10 goals and registered four assists.
His resurgence has made him one of the top-performing English forwards in the division.
According to TBR Football, England manager Thomas Tuchel and his technical team are closely monitoring Welbeck as they consider options for the World Cup squad.
With Harry Kane’s place as first-choice striker secured and Ollie Watkins sidelined by injury, Welbeck’s form and experience could make him an attractive backup option.
Despite approaching his 35th birthday, the Brighton forward’s fitness and consistency have impressed England’s backroom staff.
Tuchel’s side have already qualified for the next stage of the World Cup qualifiers after six wins from six matches, but the German coach is reportedly keen to maintain the team’s momentum.
A recall for Welbeck would mark a remarkable return for a player who once played a pivotal role for England, including a memorable backheel goal against Sweden at Euro 2012.
His journey from Manchester United and Arsenal to Brighton has been one of perseverance and quiet excellence, and his teammates’ support reflects his influence both on and off the pitch.
