Okaikwei Central Member of Parliament Patrick Yaw Boamah has called for greater support and investment in Ghana’s number one goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, as the Black Stars prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Asare, who plays for Hearts of Oak, has been in goal during Ghana’s recent qualifiers and helped the team secure a place at next year’s World Cup. However, sections of the public have expressed doubts about his ability, with some arguing that he has not been adequately tested at the highest level.
Speaking on the state of Ghana’s goalkeeping department, Patrick Yaw Boamah stressed the importance of building Asare’s confidence and preparing him for the challenges of the global stage.
"We need to build our goalkeeping area well because we’re going to play in the World Cup," he told Sporty FM. "Benjamin Asare is good, but we must help him build his confidence. The World Cup is a different kettle of fish; there will be 70,000 or 80,000 people in the stands, and stage fright can be very worrying."
The legislator further suggested that Asare be given opportunities to gain exposure and experience abroad.
"This is the time to send him on attachments to clubs in Europe, when Hearts of Oak is not in session, to train with some of the best goalkeepers and coaches around the world," he added. “It will help him realise that whatever they are doing, he can also do even better. Ati-Zigi and others are already in Europe, and Asare must be given that capacity-building opportunity to develop a bigger picture ahead of 2026."
Ghana sealed qualification for the 2026 World Cup and will learn their group opponents in December when the draw is held.
