Heart of Lions head coach Bashir Hayford has indicated that he is hoping the team’s defeat to Gold Stars in the Ghana Premier League will be a wake up call for his players who have become swollen-headed following the team’s good start to the 2025/26 campaign.
Prior to the Week 6 encounter against the Bibiani-based club on Monday, October 20, Lions had gone five matches without a defeat in to the league.
During the game played at Duns Park, Heart of Lions put up a good performance in the first 15 minutes but squandered the several chances they created.
When Gold Stars turned the game on its head, they cruised to a 3-1 victory to amass all three points.
Speaking in his post-match interview, Heart of Lions coach Bashir Hayford accepted the result, arguing that a first defeat of the season was always coming.
He believes the defeat is important to ensure his players sit-up.
“We have not been beaten for the five matches and today on somebody’s soil they have beaten us. That is football so that it’s going to be a wake up call. After all some people can beat us because some of the players have become swollen head. We are going back and we will prepare well for the next game,” Bashir Hayford said.
Despite the defeat, Heart of Lions remain in the top four of the league table with 11 points. Gold Stars on the other hand are in seventh position with nine points.
