
Dutch-Ghanaian attacker Ernest Poku produced an outstanding performance to help Bayer Leverkusen secure an important away win over Mainz 05 in the German Bundesliga on Saturday.
The 21-year-old, who joined the German outfit in the summer started and lasted 79 minutes as his outfit cruised to a 4-3 victory at the MEWA ARENA.
The former AZ Alkmaar star played a pivotal role by serving an assist, contributing to Leverkusen’s success in the much-anticipated clash.
Spain international Alejandro Grimaldo shot the visitors into the lead in 11th-minute after converting perfectly from the sport before Christian Kofane doubled the advantage for Leverkusen in the 24th-minute after being set up by the Dutch-Ghanaian winger.
In the 34th-minute mark, the home team pulled one back through Jae-Sung Lee, ensuring his side stay up in the match. Before the break, Grimaldo grabbed his second goal of the match as Leverkusen went to recess with a 3-1 lead.
Germany international Nadiem Amiri scored from the spot to reduce the deficit for the host in the 71st-minute before Martin Terrier scored to seal victory for the visitors three minutes to full time.
Meanwhile, Armindo Sieb stoppage time goal was not enough to save his outfit from defeat in the much-anticipated clash.
Since joining Leverkusen, Ernest Poku has scored two goals and provided an assists in six German Bundesliga appearances this season.
