Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has expressed surprise at the ongoing debate surrounding goalkeeper Benjamin Asare’s inclusion in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper has earned his place on merit.
Asare has been a standout performer during Ghana’s World Cup qualifying campaign, keeping five clean sheets in six matches since making his debut in March 2025.
His consistent form has drawn praise from Addo and technical advisor Winfried Schaefer, who both maintain that his selection is based purely on performance.
However, some critics have questioned whether Asare has been adequately tested, suggesting that the relatively modest level of opposition in the qualifiers may not reflect the intensity of World Cup competition.
A few fans also pointed to moments of uncertainty during a fixture against Nigeria as evidence of his inexperience.
Addo, however, dismissed the criticism, describing it as misplaced.
“He trained well. He had an extremely good week when he came in and I said it was enough to give him a chance. When we gave him a chance, he proved it,” the coach told Joy Sports.
“It’s normal that players will be criticized, but I don’t understand this discussion, especially after we qualified.”
