The National Sports Authority (NSA) has confirmed that the Accra Sports Stadium will host 35,000 fans for Ghana’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Comoros, up from the 26,000 permitted during the previous home match.
NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah announced the development at a press briefing ahead of Sunday’s fixture, explaining that the capacity boost follows the reopening of a section of the facility that had been closed for maintenance.
“The good news is that the part of the stadium where fans weren’t permitted to go, we’ve been able to do some work there, so some fans would be allowed to sit at those parts of the stadium,” he said.
The move comes after widespread calls to expand access for supporters following the limited seating arrangement during Ghana’s win over Mali in September.
The NSA believes the reopening will help ease ticketing pressure and enhance the matchday experience as the Black Stars edge closer to confirming qualification for next year’s tournament.
Sunday’s encounter, set for 19:00 GMT, is expected to draw a massive crowd, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and NSA already coordinating crowd control and fan safety measures to ensure a smooth and secure event at the national stadium.
Ghana now need just a point from Sunday’s final Group I clash in Accra to secure qualification - and could still advance even with a loss, unless Madagascar beat Mali away by an improbable margin.
