Ghanaian-born Togolese midfielder Samuel Asamoah suffered a severe neck injury in a Chinese league match after crashing into a pitch-side advertising board, with his club fearing possible paralysis.
The 31-year-old, who plays for Chinese second-division side Guangxi Pingguo, crashed head-first into an LED panel after being pushed by an opponent during Sunday’s domestic fixture.
In a statement on Monday, Guangxi Pingguo revealed that Asamoah had sustained multiple neck fractures and severe nerve damage, leaving him at risk of “high-level paraplegia” a condition that results in the loss of voluntary movement in the lower body.
The club later confirmed that the midfielder underwent emergency surgery and is now in a stable condition.
“His recovery progress will be communicated following further medical assessments,” Guangxi Pingguo added.
Zhang Zhixiong, a midfielder for Chongqing Tonglianglong, received a yellow card for the shove that led to the collision.
Asamoah, who joined Guangxi Pingguo in 2024 after spending much of his career in Belgium, has six international caps for the Togo national team.
Asamoah was born in Accra to a Togolese mother and Ghanaian father.
