President John Dramani Mahama has handed a GHC500,000 cash prize to the University for Development Studies (UDS) in celebration of their groundbreaking triumph at the FISU World University Football Tournament in China.
UDS etched their name into history as the first African institution to claim the global title, following a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Brazil’s Paulista University.
The delegation from UDS visited the Jubilee House to present the trophy to the President, who praised their resilience and success on the world stage.
During the event, President Mahama announced that government will soon establish a School Sports Authority to coordinate sports development from the foundational to the tertiary level.
“My government, through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ministry of Education, is working to strengthen youth and university sports systems to ensure that talented students or athletes are identified, developed, and supported to reach professional levels,” he said.
UDS’s dramatic final victory captured global attention after they recovered from conceding in the opening 10 seconds.
Captain Mohammed Sulemana equalised in stoppage time, before Ezedeen Alhassan’s extra-time strike from a corner sealed the historic win.
The team returned home on Sunday, October 5, to a rousing welcome at the Kotoka International Airport, marking a proud moment for Ghanaian university sports.
