Ghana’s U-17 men’s national team, the Black Starlets, began their WAFU Zone B Championship campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Togo at the Stade Charles Konan Banny on Saturday.
Despite playing with ten men for almost the entire match, the Starlets produced a resilient performance that kept their Togolese counterparts under pressure for long spells.
The game began on a shaky note for Ghana when defender Gabriel Denyinah was shown a straight red card in the third minute.
But the setback seemed to spur the team on rather than derail them. Just six minutes later, captain Joseph Narbi struck with precision to hand the Starlets a surprise lead, which they held firmly until the end of the first half.
Togo, however, clawed their way back into the contest after the break. In the 65th minute, the Togolese were awarded a penalty, which they converted to restore parity.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Ghana’s youngsters continued to dominate possession and created several promising openings but were let down by poor execution in the final third.
The result leaves the Starlets with everything to play for in their next outing. They face tournament hosts Côte d’Ivoire on Tuesday, September 23, at the same venue, knowing that a positive result could boost their chances of advancing from the group stage.
