Bibiani GoldStars captain Yakubu Haqq has sounded the alarm on the psychological and physical challenges posed by North African opponents ahead of their CAF Champions League preliminary round first leg against JS Kabylie on Saturday.
The Ghanaian champions will host the Algerian giants at the Accra Sports Stadium after Dun’s Park in Bibiani was ruled unfit to meet CAF’s requirements.
GoldStars, who are making their debut in Africa’s premier club competition, have been preparing in Accra to familiarise themselves with their temporary home and adjust to the conditions before the crucial tie.
Haqq believes this preparation is key if they are to neutralise Kabylie’s experience and tactics.
“We know these North Africans. Normally when playing Ghanaian clubs, there are strategies they normally use, which is intimidation, sometimes on the field of play. So I think what we need to do to overcome them is to also work extra mile,” he told Joy Sports.
“There are times you play 90 plus, which I think we need to stand tall and give out our best.”
GoldStars will be seeking a positive first-leg result to strengthen their chances of progressing in the competition.
