Bibiani GoldStars head coach Stephen Frimpong Manso says he anticipated the highly physical nature of his side’s opening-day clash with Bechem United, stressing that every team begins the new campaign with fresh legs and high energy.
GoldStars opened their 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season with a 2-1 victory at Dun’s Park in Bibiani, a result that sets them up for a crucial week on the continental stage.
The defending champions overcame a stern challenge from Bechem United to secure their first win of the season.
Frimpong Manso, however, downplayed concerns about the intensity of the encounter, explaining that such levels of physicality are typical in the first round of fixtures.
“It was a difficult game. Now, devoid of injuryâ¦they [the teams] all have energy and they want to use it so it’s [very physical play] normal,” he said after the match.
He added: “The situation we witnessed [in the game] was a very good reflection of normally first games.”
GoldStars now shift focus to their CAF Champions League debut against Algerian side JS Kabylie on Saturday, September 20 at 15:00 GMT, a fixture Frimpong Manso hopes will build on the momentum from their league opener.
