As Athletic Club prepares for its first UEFA Champions League match in a decade, captain Iñaki Williams has affirmed his readiness to lead the team onto European football’s biggest stage.
The Basque side is set to host Arsenal at a buzzing San Mamés on Tuesday night, marking a long-awaited return to the competition since the 2014/15 season.
Williams, who was named club captain ahead of the new campaign, emphasised the significance of the occasion and the collective effort that has brought Athletic back among Europe’s elite.
“For years we have fought to be where we are,” Williams stated during the pre-match press conference. “Tomorrow, we are going to fight to keep the dream alive for as long as possible.”
The Ghana international acknowledged the challenge posed by Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal but outlined a clear tactical plan tailored to Athletic’s strengths.
“We are playing against a great team, one that shows no mercy. We have to make the most of the chances we get,” he noted. “At San Mamés, we always have our moment, and the key will be to make the most of it. We will try to stifle them in their own half, break up their play in midfield, and finish off moves quickly, with the support of our fans.”
Athletic’s return to the Champions League represents the culmination of years of persistence and belief in the club’s philosophy. Williams’ leadership, both on and off the pitch, will be crucial as they aim to make a statement in a challenging group.
The match also serves as a personal milestone for Williams, who has grown into a talismanic figure for the club and now carries the hopes of the team and its passionate supporters into a new era of European football.
