Newport County have secured the services of Ghanaian forward Nathan Opoku on loan from Leicester City until 31 December 2025, subject to EFL approval and international clearance.
The 24-year-old arrives with a reputation as a prolific goalscorer from his time in the United States collegiate system and valuable professional experience in Europe.
Opoku first rose to prominence at Lindsey Wilson College, where he scored 19 goals in 19 appearances before moving to Syracuse University.
His impact was immediate, netting 11 goals and registering 8 assists in 25 games while helping Syracuse clinch the NCAA Division National Championship.
Leicester City snapped him up in January 2023, immediately placing him on loan at their Belgian affiliate, OH Leuven. During his spell in the Jupiler Pro League, Opoku gained consistent first-team minutes that further sharpened his attacking qualities.
Exiles boss David Hughes believes the Ghanaian’s arrival will add much-needed firepower. “We’re delighted to welcome Nathan into the group. He brings us more options to our forward line and he comes with great experience despite only being 24.
“He’s shown excellence at collegiate level and adaptability in Europe. This loan gives him an opportunity to shine while adding spark to our forward line,” Hughes said.
Opoku expressed his eagerness to hit the ground running. “I’m really excited about this new challenge and to get back on the grass. I’m feeling ready and I really want to contribute to the club’s ambitions.”
