The second edition of the Democracy Cup will no longer be staged at the Accra Sports Stadium, following a change of venue and date confirmed by Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday, August 21.
Initially scheduled for August 29 at the nation’s capital ground, the highly anticipated clash between Accra Hearts of Oak and city rivals Accra Great Olympics will now take place on September 5 at the University of Ghana Stadium.
The Democracy Cup, spearheaded by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, is designed to highlight the values of democracy through football.
Its maiden edition was held last year at the Accra Sports Stadium, where Asante Kotoko edged Hearts of Oak to lift the trophy.
A statement from Parliament explained the rationale for the adjustment: “The decision to reschedule was made after careful consideration to ensure optimal facilities, security and a premier experience for spectators, players and supporters nationwide.”
It further highlighted the appeal of the new venue: “The University of Ghana Sports Stadium offers premier amenities and a capacious environment to host this high-profile contest in the spirit of fair play, sportsmanship, and peaceful civic engagement.”
