The Gbese Mantse of the Ga State, His Royal Majesty Dr. Nii Ayi-Bonte II, has described the 2025 Homowo Peace Cup as the perfect conclusion to the annual Homowo celebrations.
Speaking after Accra Hearts of Oak secured a 2-0 victory over Kpando Heart of Lions on Sunday, the chief highlighted the growing importance of the football fixture since his enstoolment.
He noted that the event has become an integral part of the festivities, which focus on peace and thanksgiving, traditionally symbolized by the sprinkling of Kpokpoi on the Sunday following the festival.
“First of all, I need to congratulate the organizers. Since I became chief of the Ga State, every year we celebrate Homowo, and Sunday is the thanksgiving. So we choose to mark it with a football match between clubs,” Dr. Nii Ayi-Bonte II said.
Hearts of Oak, a club once chaired by the Gbese Mantse during their golden generation, have now lifted the Homowo Peace Cup twice, defeating Heart of Lions on both occasions.
The victory further cements the fixture as a key sporting highlight in the Ga State’s Homowo calendar, blending cultural heritage with footballing excitement.
